RSCAngel

Agility + XMLers

We need community members to spare some time to help us further the server. What we need is people willing and able to write XML to fix bugs listed at http://www.rscangel.org/bugzy and (probably more interestingly), write and define agility courses/objects.

A typical bug report requiring XML would be: http://www.rscangel.org/bugzy/?bug=125, where the XML you need to write to fix it will be:

Code:

<NPCLoc>
  <id>787</id>
  <startX>290</startX>
  <startY>464</startY>
  <minX>290</minX>
  <maxX>290</maxX>
  <minY>464</minY>
  <maxY>464</maxY>
</NPCLoc>

The start tags are where the NPC starts on the map and the min and max tags form a box which the NPC can walk within. ID is the ID of the NPC.

If you are up for the challenge, please create an account on our development forums: http://rscangel.org/dev and then request access via this topic: http://rscangel.org/forums/viewtopic.php?pid=392120

We will be rewarding participants, they will be on a contribution basis. We will probably do a credit scheme but that is not yet decided.

RSCAngel Open sourced

****************
Update
****************
Due to overwhelming opposition to open-sourcing and alternative solutions having be found, we will not be releasing RSCA as open source, however may release small parts at a later date.
****************

It has been suggested internally that we release the RSCAngel source code to the public.

There would be no conditions to the source code, it can be used for what ever purpose the persons using it wish.

The reason we are concidering this is that development in RSCAngel has stagnated, the developers have little time available to devote to the continuing development of RSCAngel and feel that by releasing the source code, the community will benefit from having an advanced server base to use and we may benefit from any contributions the community release back.

However, there is obviously no gaurantee that contributions will be given back.

The idea is:

1) Upload the server source and run a dedicated login server, which people can connect to, for public development (this not be linked to a dummy database and not the RSCAngel database).
2) Teach people to use the RSCA client for logging in.
3) Hopefully document various functions in the server.

What /could/ we gain from this:

1) Updates from community members who develop and release things such as quests and NPCs.
2) Unified RSC server development, any quests written and released would be compatible with all servers running the RSCAngel source code.

What /will/ we gain from this?

The ability to take on new developers without having to worry about the source code being leaked.

What /could/ we lose from this:

Players, due to more servers having the same server and therefore players spreading out amongst different servers.

What /will/ we lose from this:

The fact that we are by far the most advanced and developed RSC server. Any server owner will be able to put up a server using our source code and be exactly, serverwise, where we are at the moment.

Who will gain the most from this:

By far the community. We are hoping that by providing the source code and an environment and central place for development and updates to take place, we will also benefit from updates.

Things to take into concideration:

How well does open source work with private servers (look at the WoW private server scene, Ragnarok Online private server scene and others)?

Can we expect the same lack of public development from the release of RSCD?

Are we obligated as a community ran server to give back to the community from the release/leak of RSCD?

If we release the source code, then we cannot take it back.

We may very well be driving away players.

Please note that this is in NO WAY definitely going to happen, we are merely asking for your opinion as the players of our server.

For the record, I do *NOT* want this to happen. you dirty estonian wants this to happen. Other staff can leave their comments below.

Small update / Thank you for the voters

I wiped the kills database, so new people can get on the high-scores.

Also the voting banner has now been moved to the right side and made smaller. Hopefully people will still continue to vote.

Now, for the awards.... we decided to award the people who had more then 10 votes with a sub voucher. This time we kept staffers out of this to make it more fair and motivate the regular voters even more!

So the following people have won a subscription voucher:

HalfOunce
Beaumont
holysab1
guss89

Congratulations, to get your sub voucher send me a PM!

Latest updates.

New smithing menu (interface system done):

Tinypic ().

Also you should no-longer get the "Error unable to login. Please retry" error, in other words once you type your correct username and password and click login, you'll be logged in on the first try. (It may look like a small bug, but it's something that should not be in any server software. RSCAngel is the only one who has fixed it, if I'm not mistaken it's even present in the original RSC).

Also killed quite a few "newb" bots with this update.

January Events

Hi Everyone,

First off, I hope everyone had a wonderful time over the december festive period. RSCAngel would like to wish everyone a very happy (and slightly belated) new year!

Now, down to business! We feel we have reached the point where we have exhausted our usual advertising methods (moparscape, people googling for runescape classic). Therefore, we are going to be launching a huge advertising campaign. We shall soon be spending over 200GBP (320USD) on adverts in the forthcoming month.

We would appreciate it if everyone in the community can do their bit to help advertise us by placing this banner http://rscangel.org/banner/banner.gif or http://rscangel.org/banner/ - that our lovely banana obsessed Necroth has generously made for us, in their forum signatures/websites across the interwebs.

Pending the successful campaign, we'll continue to advertise monthly. Although 200GBP is a lot of money, it's not in advertising terms. So we hope you can do your bit to help us out by including http://rscangel.org/banner/banner.gif in your signature on various websites!

Forthcoming updates:

a) Batch events on the following actions: Fishing, Cooking, Woodcutting, Smelting, Vial refilling, Flax picking/spinning, Wool spinning.

    * If you're 59 fishing, you'll fish 5 times in a row, if you're 60 fishing you'll fish 6 times in a row.
    * This is just the start, we're trying to find the balance between making game-play easier, but still challenging.

b) F E N E X is the new "PR agent" for RSCAngel. He'll be put in charge of handling the suggestions board, basically keeping tabs on suggested/rejected suggestions and running new ones by us.
This means your voice will be heard more :)

c) A new (more stable) client has been released, without the error screen.

d) Quests. rsclassicftw has the following quests nearly completed, we shall begin testing them and releasing them into the live server soon:

    * Dragon slayer
    * Vampire slayer
    * Restlest ghost (done by Miku)
    * Demon slayer (still being worked on)

As ever, for a full list of our updates you can check our update page: http://rscangel.org/updates to be notified of updates as and when they happen you can also follow us on twitter: http://www.twitter.com/rscangel

Regards,
RSCAngel Team.
